Winter Hikes Are Almost Over

There are only two more Winter Hikes to go in the 2010 series. Don't miss your chance to enjoy these hikes through spectacular scenery. On Saturday Feb. 20 at Slate Run, enjoy a 2 or 4.5-mile hike. The following Saturday, Feb. 27, the final hike at Battelle Darby Creek includes hikes of 2, 4 or 6 miles. For directions to your Metro Parks and the Winter Hikes, click here.

 
Battelle Darby Creek

What Metro Park can you ski, skate and sled this winter? At the largest Metro Park, Battelle Darby Creek with almost 7,000 acres of prairies, fields and forests. The Darby creeks are noted nationally for their tremendous diversity and abundance of both aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals.

Designated state and national scenic rivers, Big and Little Darby Creek are home to 98 species of fish, five of which are endangered in Ohio. Forty-four species of freshwater mussels live in these waters, eight of which are on the Ohio endangered list.

Metro Parks has restored about 400 acres of prairies using only seeds native to the Darby Plains. The park features more than 16 miles of trails including ones for cross-country skiing and several scenic areas for picnicking. 6:30 pm - Walk the trails and scan the fields as we search for the woodcock's aerial dance on a 1-mile hike.

What's Up Duck
10:00 am - Let's explore the new Darby wetlands during waterfowl migration.

Wacky Woodcock
6:00 pm - Join us as we search for the American woodcock as he performs his aerial courtship dance.

March 13: Blacklick Woods
Underground Railroad
7:00 pm - Travel from the South to the North and discover Ohio's Underground Railroad. Adults and children 10 and older.

March 13: Glacier Ridge
Salamander Search
6:00 pm - Take a 1-mile hike and discover salamanders at the vernal pool.

Metro Parks nature centers at Blacklick Woods, Blendon Woods and Highbanks are open daily and naturalists and volunteers are available to answer questions.
